4 Ways to Help Your Kids Get Energy Out Indoors During Thanksgiving Break

Fun, movement-based activities to keep little gymnasts entertained, active, and off the couch, all from the comfort of home.

Thanksgiving break is almost here! And while the time off is a great chance to rest and reset, we know one thing for sure: kids don’t stop moving just because school does. With colder weather and busy holiday prep, getting that energy out indoors can feel like a challenge.

Luckily, you don’t need a full gym to keep your child active and engaged. Here are 7 fun, family-approved ways to help your little gymnast move their body, build coordination, and stay active during the break.

1. DIY Living Room Obstacle Course

Use couch cushions, chairs, yoga mats, and blankets to create a safe course they can crawl under, jump over, and balance across. Try playing some inspiring, high stakes music to up the ante!

Why it works: This encourages creativity and gross motor movement. Bonus points if you let them “design” it themselves!

2. Family Talent Show

Turn your living room into a stage and let everyone in the family show off their skills! Kids can spend the day planning their act, choosing a walk-out song, putting together fun outfits, and choreographing a short routine. Encourage them to perform something they’re proud of, whether that’s a cartwheel combo, a dance number, a song, or even a magic trick. Parents should join in too, it’s good for kids to see what their parents are passionate about!

Why it works: It’s creative, confidence-boosting, and burns energy in the best way. Giving kids the spotlight helps them feel proud of their passions, and spending the day building up to the “show” keeps everyone engaged and moving. Plus, it’s a memory-making family activity you’ll all be laughing about for a long time.

3. Laundry Basket Sled Pull

Put a small sibling or stuffed animal in a laundry basket and have your gymnast pull it across a rug using a rope or towel. Switch roles for more fun.

Why it works: It’s strength training in disguise and feels silly. Great for teamwork too!

4. Add On

This classic memory game gets a gymnastics twist! Start with one simple movement, then take turns adding one move at a time to the end of the sequence. Each player has to remember and repeat the full routine before adding their own. Keep going until someone forgets the order.

A few good moves for this game could include your favorite dance move, cartwheels, yoga poses, forward rolls, and spins!

Why it works: It’s part memory challenge, part movement game. Encourages focus, sequencing, and creativity while reinforcing familiar gymnastics skills in a playful way.
