How to DIY Build a Safe Gymnastics Balance Beam for Practicing At Home

Gymnast balancing on couch edge like a balance beam

A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents

This build is perfect for balance beam professionals in the making!

If your kid spends more time walking across the edge of the couch than sitting on it, it might be time to bring the beam home! This DIY gymnastics balance beam is perfect for little gymnasts who want to practice their skills safely between classes. We designed this beam to be low, stable, and soft, so your gymnast can practice with confidence—and you can breathe easy knowing it’s built to last.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 solid piece of wood: 8 ft long, 4 inches wide, 4 inches tall (maple or pine is ideal)
  • 2 wooden support blocks: 12 inches long x 6 inches wide x ¾–1 inch thick
  • Leather-like fabric: 8 ft x 16 inches
  • Heavy-duty staple gun and staples
  • Sandpaper
  • 8 wood screws, 2½ to 3 inches
  • Drill
  • Wood glue

Let’s Build!

1. Sand the Wood

Sand all surfaces of the beam until completely smooth. Round the top edges slightly with extra sanding to prevent discomfort or snags. Wipe off any dust.

2. Wrap the Beam in Fabric

Center your leather-like fabric over the top of the beam, lengthwise. Pull it tightly around the sides and underneath. Using a heavy-duty staple gun, staple the fabric securely along the bottom of the beam. Space staples every 2–3 inches for a clean, secure finish. Fold the ends like a gift package and staple them down securely.

3. Attach the Base Boards

Flip the beam upside down, so the bottom is facing up. Take one of your support blocks (12 inches x 6 inches) and lay it horizontally across the main wooden beam so the wide side (12 inches) is perpendicular to the main wooden beam. Add wood glue between the main wooden beam and the support beams. Use 4 wood screws to attach the beam to the base board. Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood. Screw through the base board down into the main wooden beam at each corner for stability. Repeat the same process with the second base board at the other end of the beam.

4. Flip it Over and Test

Turn the beam right side up. Place on a safe surface to prevent sliding. Give it a wobble test before the first use!

5. Have fun!

Once the wood glue has dried, your gymnast can give it a try! Remember to have fun and stay safe!

Disclaimer:

This DIY balance beam is intended for basic balance exercises only. It is not designed for advanced gymnastics skills such as flips or dismounts. Always supervise children during use, ensure the beam is placed on a non-slip surface, and regularly inspect for wear or damage. Use at your own risk.
