5 Outdoor Spots in the Bay Area for Gymnastics, Kid’s Activities and Soaking up the Sun

Kids running in park.

With the summer months coming up, it’s important to get outside to have some fun! The Bay Area is lucky to have so many beautiful spots that make for perfect places to practice gymnastics. Grass provides a bit of cushion for falls and can lessen the pressure felt on wrists and ankles. Sand helps to absorb impact on your wrists, ankles, knees, hips, and back, especially helpful for practicing cartwheels!

Here are some places to check out that have large, open grass fields or sand banks, so your little ones can safely flip out while you chill out:

1. Central Park, Lake Elizabeth – Big Grassy Fields, Playgrounds, Waterparks, & More!

Lake Elizabeth is located in Fremont, about 4 miles from our PacWest Fremont location! Lake Elizabeth offers big grass fields good for cartwheels and somersaults. In addition, there are multiple playgrounds, picnic areas, fishing areas, a beautiful trail around the lake, a waterpark, a dog park, a skatepark, and more. The summer concerts in the park are lovely! Check out the schedule and bands here. There is an activity for everyone in the family!

2. Moss Beach – Sandy Beaches & Abundant Wildlife

Moss Beach is located about 15 minutes north of Half Moon Bay State Beach. Moss Beach offers many unique things that make for an interesting day! The large, soft sand beaches are perfect for practicing handstands, and building sand castles! In the rockier areas, there is abundant life in the tide pools, including starfish and sea anemones! Moss Beach Park has a playground, picnic tables, and beach access. Check out the tips and special spots found by other adventurers here.

3. Lake Temescal – Picnic Areas with City Skyline Views

Lake Temescal is located in Oakland. The grassy picnic areas and small beach are perfect for your little ones to show you what they’ve learned in gymnastics! The lake offers beautiful sights of the Oakland skyline and breathtaking hikes that can make you feel distant from the city, without the actual distance.

4. Tilden Regional Park – Meadows, Lakes, Petting Farms, & More!

Tilden Regional Park is located in Berkeley. The park offers grassy fields, meadows, lakes, trails, a merry-go-round, a petting farm, and an awesome environmental education center for teaching kids more about the world around them! The lakes are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, you could try renting paddle boats or rowboats as well! Still have questions? Check out “The Ultimate Guide to Tilden Park” here.

5. Alum Rock Park – Waterfalls, Playgrounds, Picnics, & More!

Alum Rock Park is located in San Jose. The park has many fields perfect for tumbling in! In addition, Alum Rock has a beautiful playground, lakes, picnic areas, and many hiking trails. Some trails even lead to waterfalls, which should be stunning after our winter of rain! As stated by JJ on Yelp, “Wow…Absolutely beautiful and a hidden gem for sure!”

6. Natural Bridges State Beach – Soft Sand and Awesome Wildlife!

Natural Bridges is located in Santa Cruz. The beach is home to natural bridges carved out over millions of years from waves pounding against the cliffs. The sandy beach is perfect for watching your little one’s practice, with a beautiful view! Natural Bridges is special not only for its stunning architecture and hikes through the redwoods but the unique wildlife found in the tide pools and the ocean! Spot seals, sea lions, and pelicans on the beach, and sea anemones, starfish, crabs, and more in the pools! Pro Tip: Winston C. on Yelp recommends Swanton Blvd. for free parking!
